In 989 CE Sanjo Muunechika forged Kogitsuemaru when he met a mysterious boy near the Fushimi Inari gate, who was believed to be a fox deity Inari, when he prayed at the shrine before he forged the sword. The boy assisted him on forging the sword with his (said to be) inhuman skill, and it turned out to be Munechika’s great masterwork. He nicknamed it "Kogitsune-maru" (kogitsune meaning little fox), in honor of the deity that assisted him on forging the sword,

  • He only requires half as many resources to repair as other Tachis.
  • There is a sword said to be Kogitsunemaru with the length of 53.8 cm enshrined in Ishikiri-Tsurugiya Shrine, Osaka, Japan. However, it's unclear whether this sword is the real Kogitsunemaru or not. This sword is open for public viewing during April and October, respectively Spring and Autumn Grand Festivals.
