Izuminokami Kanesada is an uchigatana living in the citadel.

Appearance[]

Izuminokami Kanesada, standing at 186cm (6'1), is a slender sword with long flowing, dark-brown hair that ends past his knees. His bangs are brushed to the side messily as his hair hangs over his shoulder in a light ponytail held together by a red bow. He sports four earrings; three on his left ear and one on his right.

His Hanamaru outfit is made up of many parts of his usual battle attire, including a tight neck high undershirt with sleeves that end at the back of his hands, a white shirt, and his iconic red kimono. Here, his red kimono is held up by a tie at his shoulders. At his hips is a decorated belt. He then wears tighter black pants and knee-high black boots.

Background[]

  • Izuminokami Kanesada was a sword created by the 12th generation Kanesadas in 1867 CE. He then was owned by Hijikata Toshizou of the shinsengumi along with Horikawa Kunihiro.
  • He was asked to be made only after the Shinsengumi earned popularity and Kondo noted that they should have better weapons to maintain their charisma. While Kondo resolved to find a Kotetsu (Nagasone Kotetsu) for himself, Hijikata seeked for a Kanesada. He did find a swordsmith from Kanesada school, and asked to be made a tachi which had similar characteristics to his wakizashi (Horikawa Kunihiro). This might be the reason Izumi and Horikawa looked similar to each other.
  • One theory goes that Izuminokami wasn't used during Hijikata's last battle in Hakodate, but instead got sent back to his hometown along with a photo taken there a few days before the battle. The one Hijikata used is a sword made by Sukesada of Bizen Osafune school.
  • He was mentioned in a letter Kondo sent to his hometown on 1863. It is not known if Hijikata had 2 Kanesada swords although the possibility he had 2 swords are not high.
